John Baxter is the thinking man's ex pat. Having been in love with France for over 50 years I have a large personal library of France related literature including everyone of Baxter's Books. He opens his homage to France and food with a quote from Talleyrand that says"Show me another pleasure which comes every day and lasts an hour."Two common perceptions are that the French will eat anything and that they do it exceptionally well. Baxter's book is more than a loving testament to the joys of French eating. It is also an in depth history of a people who have endured 2,000 years of battle across its lands where starvation has been a constant threat even as recently as the mid 20 th century. Having been invaded by Germany three times in 70 years and suffering through two World Wars just 20 years apart, eating achieves a prominence most of us can't relate to.On a happier note, John Baxter's unabashed love for France, eating, art and literature shines through on every page along with beautiful color plates of famous works of art relating to the joy of food.
